The Dred Scott Statue Penny Drive
|
A Landmark Decision The Dred Scott Decision in 1857 was a major catalyst that brought on the Civil War, motivated Abraham Lincoln to run for President, and resulted in the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. In little more than a decade after that decision, our nation abolished slavery, granted equal citizenship to all, and guaranteed the right to vote regardless of color. | |
|
Why a Penny Drive? Visitors to Dred Scott’s gravesite (Calvary Cemetery – St. Louis) often leave pennies on the headstone. Many believe the penny is left as a tribute to Lincoln, an icon for the abolition of slavery.
In 2010, the Dred Scott Statue Penny Drive was launched to help fund a life-size statue of Dred and Harriet Scott. The statue will be erected near the Old Courthouse – site of the first Dred Scott freedom trials. With your help, the statue will be dedicated as a symbol of victory for freedom fighters...past, present and future. |

How to get involved
March 8, 2010 our sponsor M&I Bank, kicked off the Dred Scott Statue Penny Drive. They conducted a month long competition between their seventeen (17) branches. All M&I Bank locations will serve as collection points for the penny drive.
Only three locations can accept actual pennies. Donor slips are available at all teller windows. You will need to call ahead and schedule your visit if you want your pennies counted and a receipt at that time. The tellers will be happy to accommodate you. Otherwise you will receive an acknowledgement from the foundation, unless you do not require one.
The three locations that count and accept pennies are:
