Landmark Decision, Landmark Location

ST.  LOUIS (June 27, 2012)—The St. Louis Beacon hosted a panel discussion over the legacy of Dred and Harriet Scott on June 27, at 11:00AM at the Old Courthouse.

The St. Louis Beacon is an online-only newspaper that covers the greater St. Louis area was launched in May of 2008. Rather than simply covering news events, it trends toward public issues in St. Louis.

St. Louis Beacon Chairman; Richard K. Weil Jr, introduced the event and under his leadership the Beacon has been on the fast track of progression, and in a few short years has become a viable news source in St. Louis.

The legal aspects that determined the outcome of the Dred Scott Decision were dissected by retired Missouri Supreme Court Justice: Michael Wolff, and Washington University professor of law and history:  Dr. David Konig.  The great-great granddaughter of Dred Scott himself, Mrs. Lynne Jackson, provided a personal perspective of the case and its outcome and effect on history.

St.Louis Beacon staffer, Bill Frievogel, served as the moderator in the discussion, where he also shared thoughts about the challenge to affirmative action in the upcoming Texas case.

The panel discussion was the last event on the June calendar for the Beacon, and was followed by an opportunity for Q and A, where the audience could pose questions and concerns about the decision.

There were around 75 attendees for the discussion, and some paid to attend an excellent meal at Kemoll’s restaurant following the discussion.
